A Personal Plea

As I mentioned a few days ago, Nurse Teeny has been dealing with migraines all too often lately. I was diagnosed a year and a half ago by a neurologist and until about two months ago, have had them pretty well under control with a twice daily prophylactic dose of Topamax and the rare PRN dose of Midrin for breakthrough headaches. My neurologist wrote for two refills of a 30 day supply of Midrin last April and I picked up my second refill this spring, if that tells you how rarely I had needed it.

But alas, the tune has changed and this is becoming an almost-daily battle. It’s starting to interfere with work (and I have to be at my job for a year before I qualify for FMLA coverage). I found a neurologist here who specializes in migraines and have an appointment for the 26th.

In the meantime, I’m not supposed to take Midrin more than three times a week, but I have to be careful about OTC meds because it increases the danger of rebound headaches. I know exercise helps prevent these babies but it’s really hard to drag myself to the gym when my head is pounding and wants to jump out of my skull.

So I implore my nursing friends out there…any tips for how to cope?
