Nurses and Social Media

I came across an interesting document at work this week. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing recently released guidelines advising nurses on the use of social media.

As I have watched the presence of health care professionals in social media grow exponentially this year, I can understand the need for some support. Nurses continue to be the most trusted profession, but there has been enough controversy to necessitate that we be reminded when and how it is okay to share.

I also appreciate NCSBN acknowledging the place of blogs, Facebook and other forums in professional dialogue. The times they are a’changing and rather than put up futile resistance, it is time to embrace the potential of social media and guide one another toward ethical and honest conversation.
