Bookworms: Her Nowhere

My first “Just for Fun” recommendation keeps it in the family.

Yep, I’m related to an awesome writer. 😉 My cousin Brigetta Schwaiger recently self-published her first novel Her NowhereI started slowly after downloading it in the midst of moving, but finally got to finish it this weekend after I literally couldn’t stop reading the last 1/2 of the book. Nurse Teeny stayed up way past her bedtime for this one.

The story revolves around a woman named Anna Broxton (who also happens to be a nurse!), who has left her life in the U.S. to work on an organic farm in Sweden. I won’t spoil the plotline by telling you why, but I will say that this book strikes at the heart of what it means to be a woman, a wife, a mother, a daughter, and a friend. Rather than apologize for the complexity and brokenness within each of us, it celebrates these qualities and explores the idea of second chances. I love that.

I also really appreciated the attention to detail and beautiful imagery. Brigetta has a way with words – transporting your imagination to another place and letting you see the characters and feel the emotions while avoiding any sign of cliché. I kept wondering who would play the characters in a movie version of the story, because I could just see it so vividly.

And just to reassure you, I’m not just blowing smoke to promote a family member. If you don’t believe me, check out the reviews on Amazon and Goodreads. I’m not the only one who loved it. 🙂

As of now, the book is only available on Amazon Kindle (at an incredibly affordable price), but according to this interview, a paperback version may become available in the near future. I can’t wait to give it to everyone I know for Christmas!

If you check it out, please do spread the word and leave a comment here!
