Why the Public Face

You may have noticed a little change last week…

My About page got a little BIG facelift! 🙂

After much, much, much deliberation and a lot of soul-searching, I decided it was time to go public.

Why, you may ask? A few reasons:

  1. The more I post on this blog and the more ideas that come up, the more I want to write and create, using this site as a venue. The more I write, the more I want to invite collaboration with other blogs and other websites. I can’t really effectively network as an anonymous blogger.
  2. I mention bits and pieces about my life outside of nursing here and there. But as my husband takes off on his own adventure and we move forward in our life together, there is so much more that I want to share. This is still a nursing blog, but if good self-care is part of good nursing, then I should have a life outside work (and not be afraid to tell the tales).
  3. Some of you pointed out that it is better to do this on my own terms. You are so right. I have nothing to hide, so why am I hiding?
  4. Perhaps most importantly, I realized that this blog is part of my nursing voice. The Makings of a Nurse is turning 5 years old this fall, and transforms a little bit each year. If there is one key thing I learned from reading Suzanne Gordon’s book, it was that I have a responsibility to represent my profession honestly and openly. I can’t do that as effectively if I’m concealed behind an online identity.

Some things won’t change. I’ll still speak in generalities about my workplace and my education, in order to protect patients, colleagues, and classmates. I’ll still be as vigilant as ever about HIPAA (if not more so). I sincerely appreciate the comments you left on my survey earlier this year, both for and against this move. Believe me when I say I carefully considered them all.

I hope it will only encourage you to come back for more. I hope knowing me as a more three-dimensional person will help us get better acquainted.

I’m excited to take this big step with you!
